Otis Richardson Obituary, Death – Otis Kelly Richardson, 88, of Pamplin, Virginia, died at Lynchburg General Hospital on September 15, 2023. He lived in Pamplin. He married Roselee “Rose” Shelton Richardson and had two children. His parents, Clarence Edward and Carrie Goin Richardson, died before his birth on January 29, 1935 in Pamplin, Virginia. His whole life he attended Rocks Baptist Church.
Otis joined the US Army in February 1957. He studied medicine at Fort Sam Houston in Houston, Texas. Afterward, he was deployed to Washington, then to South Korea to serve at the DMZ for one year and eighteen months. Otis worked tirelessly for 24 hours on guard duty and often filled in for sleepy guards. After his Korean discharge, he went to Fort Knox. He drove Red Cross vehicles to and from the hospital while stationed there.
He got his driver’s license in two days. Otis received praise from the army general for his outstanding service.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister and her husband, Ruby R. Almond and Joseph of Pamplin; five nieces and nephews, Ronnie Richardson and wife, Debbie, Mike Richardson, Sabrina R. Savage, Jane A. Thomas and husband, Robbie, and Tim Almond and wife, Tina; many great nieces and nephews; a sister-in-law, Virginia Shelton; and special friends, Ralph and Shirley Cheat.
Reverend Doug Lee will officiate a funeral at Rocks Baptist Church on Monday, September 18, 2023, at 2:00 pm. A joint honor guard from American Legion Post #104 and VFW Post #9855 will bury the deceased in the church cemetery with full military honors. The family will host a church reception for friends and family one hour before the ceremony.
