At the age of 84, he passed away suddenly at his home in Crow Agency, leaving a void in the basketball community. Pretty Weasel, who stood at just 5-foot-10, defied his stature with incredible quickness, jumping ability, and dexterity.

In the 1950s, he rose to stardom at Hardin High School, shining a spotlight on basketball in Montana’s reservations. He blazed a trail for Native basketball players, setting a precedent that still resonates today, more than six decades later. His legacy extends beyond the game; he was a simple and humble Apsáalooke man who radiated greatness.

Fans flocked to gyms across eastern Montana to witness Pretty Weasel’s brilliance, and he didn’t disappoint. His 128 points in four tournament games, including a staggering 48 in a consolation win over Billings Central, left opponents in awe. He averaged 29.4 points per game during his senior year, earning all-state honors.

Hardin retired his No. 29 jersey, and he was inducted into the Montana High School Association Hall of Fame in 1993. In 2007, the Montana Indian Athletic Hall of Fame honored him as part of its inaugural class. Pretty Weasel’s former teammate, George Grover, marveled at his quickness and team-oriented play. He described Pretty Weasel as a cut above the rest, even comparing him to other talented players of his era.

In addition to his basketball prowess, Pretty Weasel was a state high jump champion and Montana’s most outstanding athlete. Despite offers from prominent colleges, he chose to play at Rocky Mountain College before returning to the Crow Reservation.
