John Varni Obituary, Death – Dave Varni, John Varni, The 22nd of July 1925 till the 22nd of August 2023 Modesto, in the state of California – John Dave Varni was born on July 22, 1925, and he spent his childhood years in the city of Modesto, California. He attended Washington Elementary School, Roosevelt Junior High School, and Modesto High School before earning his diploma.
He joined the Navy when he was 17 years old, participated in World War II as a Pharmacist Mate, and was stationed in Guam during that time. In 1933, John’s father Attilio launched a beer and wine distributorship, and in 1936, the Seven-Up Bottling and Distributing Company debuted on N. 9th Street.
John began working there when he was very young and gained valuable experience in the industry at this time. On the other side of the building, his mother Catarina had a business where she prepared and sold pasta, ravioli, and pasta sauce. In 1960, the brothers Louie, John, and Fred Varni created Varni Brothers Corporation, a platform from which they could further develop their business.
While John worked on establishing the Stanislaus Distributing Company, which provides the county of Stanislaus and the counties that surround it with a variety of beers, wines, and spirits, his brothers established the Seven-Up Bottling Company. Growing up, each of John’s children contributed to the success of the family business in which they were employed.
As adults, John’s five children all found employment at the bottling facility or one of the distributorships. John’s grandparents Attilio and Catarina, his sister Dina, his brothers Louie and Fred, and his sons-in-law Kent and John all passed away before him. John was the last surviving member of his family.
John is survived by his wife of 74 years, Jean, as well as their seven children Kathleen, Lorraine, Diane (Jim), Larry (Connie), John (Richelle), Jean (Albert), and Tony (Carol), as well as 14 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 17 great-great-grandchildren. John was an extremely involved member of the community.
He was a member of VFW, Elks Club, Moose Lodge, a charter member of the SOS Club and Spring Creek Country Club, Knights of Columbus, Sons of Italy, Stanislaus Swiss Italian Club, Stanislaus County Farm Bureau, Blue Diamond Growers, Modesto Serra Club, The Old Fishermen’s Club, founding member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and School where his children attended and where he helped establish the Monsignor William P. Kennedy Education Foundation. In addition, John was a founding member of Central Catholic High School, from which all six of his children and six of his grandchildren graduated.
