Gilberto Mendez Obituary, Death – Belmar authorities have identified the victim of Sunday’s tragic drowning incident as Gilberto Mendez Jr., a 42-year-old resident of Roselle Park in Union County. The incident unfolded on the evening of Sunday when a distress call was made in response to swimmers encountering difficulties near Belmar’s Sixth Avenue beach.
Upon receiving the distress call at 6:06 p.m. on Sunday, the Belmar Police responded promptly to the scene. Upon arrival, they found multiple Belmar lifeguards and water rescue personnel already in the water, engaged in the rescue efforts. They successfully rescued five swimmers from the turbulent waters.
Tragically, one swimmer was found unresponsive in the water near the Fifth Avenue beach. Swift action was taken to retrieve this individual, who was subsequently transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center located in Neptune. Additionally, two other swimmers who were also facing distress were transported to the same medical center for further medical evaluation and care.
